Artist Statement

I am a sculptor and garden designer in the Washington D.C area. I create sculpture and design gardens because I want to bring beauty into being. It’s one small thing I can add to the conversation about what is good. I sculpt because being creative feels inherently hopeful and optimistic, even in what seems like a very dark time in our culture.

 

I work in many different mediums and the work is both additive and subtractive. In additive work such as garden design, the question is when to stop....when the next added element confuses rather than adds. In subtractive work the question is have I taken off everything extraneous to reveal the core and underlying structure of an idea.

 

I am fascinated by how the choice of materials determines the boundaries of what I can create—the interplay of material and concept.

 

Most of my work is around the idea of relationship and attachment, rebirth and disintegration; How things come together and come apart.
